Is there a difference between genealogy and ancestry?

Shan Lanen: EVERYONE comes from ancestors. You don't exist without them. Genealogy is the methodical process of using records/ documents, to investigate those ancestors and identify them. You have ancestors (whether you know them or not), it is a "thing". Genealogy means FINDING ancestry... it is something you DO, and optional. They both involve ancestors but are two separate definitions/ things.

Lewis Ranft: Genealogy relates to genetics whereas ancestry refers to ancestors.

Fermin Tara: Genealogy and Genetics are not the same thing. Genealogist are family historians and therefore they discover people's ancestry. If a person has a genetics question they should go under Science and Mathematics and the sub category Biology but we get Genetics question here and it annoys some of the regulars.,.You might say Genealogy is researching one's ancestry using documents/records....Show more

Clifford Riggleman: Genealogy is a family lineage that can be trace! d via paper documents or sometimes oral history. Ancestry is simply your ancestors.Genetic genealogy is the tracing of ancestry via genetic tests

Freddy Shutler: Yes there is a small difference. Genealogy is one line of a person ancestory. Basically, it is tracing the ancestry from one certain person. (for example, starting with your father and tracing where he came from back as far as you can or starting with a great great grandparent and tracing the line to you.) The term genealogy is also used to refer to the study of someone's ancestry. Ancestry is a more generalized term that just refers to all ancestors....Show more

Adrian Sherlin: for all intents and purposes they are the same in that people doing their family research will exchange the words genealogy, ancestry, heritage, and family tree.If you're talking scientific research there are differences.

Zulema Baccam: Genealogy is the study and documentation of ones ancestry (family). It has very ! little to do with genetics.

Ileen Oshell: Everyone has s! ome sort of ancestry, because everyone had two parents, but not everyone makes a hobby of genealogy. It is a little like the difference between birds and birdwatching. Almost everyone has seen birds, but only a few become birdwatchers.Ancestry is your ancestors, or mine, or ShirlyT's, or Barack Obama's. All of us have parents, grandparents, great grandparents, and so on back into the mists of time. Not all of us look them up, document them, seek our 4th cousins twice removed, or get frustrated by dead ends....Show more

Lewis Ranft: The dictionary says genealogy means "the study and tracing of lines of descent"Ancestry means " Ancestral descent or lineage."

Donte Schoenhals: perhspd in thid life but wr have lived many lives
