home school information?

Connie Dickirson: she is in 3rd grade i believe she is right in line with her grade level but i have been told by her teacher that she gets bored in class possibly due to already knowing the information. she has also been in the GT program since first grade. i was wanting to do a mix of online teaching and me personally teaching if that is possible. she has been wanting to switch to homeschooling for 2 years now. i wasnt able to due to my job then but i now have one where i can be home to do the work needed...Show more

Karey Dunken: Generally speaking, you just enroll her in whatever grade she's supposed to be in. So, if she's in 7th, enroll her for 8th grade next year....if she's in 3rd, enroll her for 4th, etc.As for the transfer, that depends on the specific school. If she's doing online schooling, most of them will send you a packet to fill out (traditional school stuff such as a medical form, her full name, address, grade, a "contract" of sorts that states th! e school's policies)....after that, many schools will do the rest of the work for you...but for other schools, you will have to call the school she is currently enrolled in and request her records to send to her online school (they often have a fax number if her school is willing to send it all themselves, otherwise, you can send it by normal mail). If you're going with traditional home-schooling (not online), you usually have to talk to the board of education to get things rolling. Again, there will most likely be several papers you have to sign, then you'll have to work on getting all the books she'll need, check out your local laws on WHAT she needs (curriculum-wise), etc....Show more

Peggy Sandefer: Find the right online program. If you already had, then speak to the counselor of that school. He/she will explain the procedure. Getting started is very easy so don't worry at all.

Ervin Overbee: Look at all your options. Start by looking up Texas' homeschooling! law. Texas is very loose in its law. Then go be a fly on the ! wall in some homeschooling discussion threads. No, not YA, this is filled with nuts of every type. Think about what type of curriculum you want, Christian, secular, student driven. Contact a few local homeschooling groups. Meet the parents. Talk to them to get a feeling for what they're doing. Don't expect to like them all or feel that you must copy what they do. Sometimes it seems like other parents just want to boost their egos by telling you their way is best. You MUST use an online school or no NEVER do that, you won't be a cool homeschooling family, you have to be independent. It's annoying, but if you're only asking for their experience, it's good to listen. 3rd grade, 8 or 9, is young to be on a screen hours a day for school. But you can combine it with traditional paper and pencil and some online programs encourage that. You need to research....Show more
