What is a good War-Based Strategy Board Game? Aside from Risk and Stratego...?

Ilana Gaster: well if you don't want luck as factor i know 1 board game, it's name is "Prince of Chaos".war strategy game with very heavy thinking also long time too play and no luck factor at all.

Armanda Hertel: You mention not wanting luck based games, but Risk is ruled by the dice rolls. Here's a list of some simple war-themed/combat games.Memoir: '44: A simple WWII game with only 3 types of units, simple rules, and a 30 minute playing time. Uses dice for combat. A classic.Small World: Help a civilization take over the world. If you civ gets too weak, you can abandon them and start a new one. Almost no luck involved. Shogun: A bit like Risk, but the combat involves dropping the army cubes into a tower... the army with the most cubes that fall out the bottom wins the fight. A must have. Hammer Of The Scots: A great "block" war game from Columbia games. The rules might be a bit much if you've never played a real war game before. A game lasts about 3 hours, but is! worth every minute of it....Show more

Bailey Lares: Good Strategy Board Games

Marcel Then: If you've got seven players, then Diplomacy is the ideal game. Aside from who plays as which country, there's zero luck involved--Everything after initial setup is determined by the players themselves. The map is also balanced at high level play, although early games tend to have Italy and Austria get bitchslapped pretty hard by their neighbors.GMT games designs a number of wargames that have some luck, but are still primarily strategy-driven. Paths of Glory (a World War I game) and Twilight Struggle (a Cold War game) are very similar in game mechanics. Both are only two players and are more of the traditional moving chits around on a map kind of games. Strictly speaking Twilight Struggle isn't a wargame because you're placing influence markers in countries, but it shares all the mechanics and elements of a wargame, just with different words (ie: Influence instead of Divi! sions or Corps).Horus Heresy was recently reprinted by Fantasy! Flight Games and given an update. When I played it back in the 90s it was a regular wargame where you pushed chits around and threw dice at one another. I haven't played the new version, but I'm told FFG did away with the dice and made combat more deterministic. The price tag is a little beefy, though, so I haven't gotten around to the new one...Finally, FFG also makes Twilight Imperium, Starcraft: The Boardgame, and Civilization: The Boardgame. TI and Starcraft are wargames with interesting non-war elements to them, but the important thing to remember is that they're still fundamentally all about fighting--Politics and trade and technology in those games are cool, but they're geared towards improving the war aspect of that game.Civilization: The Boardgame (the one by FFG, don't get Eagle Games' one if you see it somewhere. That game was bad.) deserves its own paragraph because of how well put together it is. It's an actual grand strategy game, which is to say there's a lo! t you can do with it besides just blow one another up. It has four distinct victory conditions (economy, culture, science, and military) and a surprising amount of player interaction. There are also no dice, but combat involves a little bit of controlled luck--ie: You can get unlucky and be shafted, but usually that only happens if you're not being careful. That said, Civ has less of a learning curve and more of a learning cliff. It's fun, but it takes 3-4 games to learn what you're actually doing, which puts some people off it....Show more

Alberto Kozub: You could try Chess. Its kind of like war. Back in the old days when people needed a substitute for bloody wars, Chess was invented...

Miguel Densley: My favorite war-based strategy board game would have to be Axis & Allies. They have several different game types now but the original started with the USA entering WWII and went from there. They have a free online version similar to the actual board game called T! ripleAhttp://triplea.sourceforge.net/mywikiLet me know if you like it. ! I'm always looking for someone to play their original rendition of the game with....Show more

Houston Venezia: It's difficult to have a war-game without luck being some factor in the game. However, here are a couple of games you may like:Pirates of the Cursed Seas - The game is no longer in production, however, you can still purchase packs from hobby stores and Target. It is a game of pillaging and plundering, and half the fun is building the little ships. Technically, it's not really a war-game, however it can be adapted for war-based scenarios. Each player builds a fleet of ships and crew up to a certain build total and sail out in search of gold and plunder.Heroscape - Also no longer in production, but can still be purchased from your local board gaming store. The game is played on a 3D build-it-yourself hex-board and includes an interesting battle system. It's a little like Dungeons and Dragons. Like Pirates, there is a maximum point limit players can use to draft! or build armies that will fight each other. Heroscape is more prominently based on annihilating the opposing armies, but it can also be objective based, like Capture the Flag or King of the Hill....Show more
