Question about boating?

Mack Ukich: In Iowa, if you are over the age of 18, you do not need "a license". or you do not have to take the Iowa Safe Boating Education Course (although it would be a great idea for you to do so - and I strongly suggest it). Here is the link, if you are interested:http://www.boat-ed.com/iowa/boating_card.htmlBoat rentals are available. In fact, if you have no boating experience whatsoever - this may be the best way for you to start. . . If you ask, the rental place will, I'm sure, give you some good basic instructions. A good "Mississippi River" boat could cost you anywhere from about $800 to $80,000 depending on the size and type, and new or used. . . But for sure, plenty to choose from under $5,000 depending on your lifestyle, philosophy and pocketbook. I would, if I were you, however really spend some time around some of the Marinas and or boat launch facilities, and meet some boaters, make some friends, and learn all you can about that area of the Mississippi, an! d the boats and boating opportunities - before rushing into buying anything. Boaters are pretty good folk - and they are quick to offer advice and assistance - Soon enough, you will be able to determine what is good for you, and what is not. Good Luck,...Show more

Foster Koopmann: you don't need a "boaters license" but to be sure you need to check with your local natural recourse's office or Game Warden. again with the boat rentals are few and far between because its a liability issue with people who have never owned one. i suggest you get a good 14ft flat bottom john boat with about a 10hp motor on it. don't go straight to the Mississippi river learn on some of the smaller rivers or creaks first to learn about currents and how your boat handles. use it for a year or so and upgrade to something you want. john boats are great starter boats and are wonderful for fishing. a GOOD used john boat should cost you NO MORE than $2500 for boat motor and trailer. i starte! d on a john boat, now i have a 31ft house boat....Show more
