When a company sells stock for the first time in an initial public offering or decides to raise additional funds by issuing more shares, that is called a primary market and the money goes to the shareholders. The subsequent trading of shares between individuals is called the secondary market. The money raised in that process goes to the seller of the shares rather than the company.
